Drug addiction in the Philippines is a growing concern of the society as the number of substance abusers mostly younger generations rose dramatically within the last ten years. DDB estimated 1.8 million regular users and 1.6 million occasional users of illegal drugs, totaling 3.4 million users our country.
Addiction is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use despite its harmful effects.Aside from the destruction of oneself, most painful would be the destruction of all kinds of relationship an individual has. Many of the family ties were broken due to the consequences and destructive effects of excessive drug intake. Ultimately in large measure the worst effect of prolonged drug use could be the weakened spiritual relationship with GOD.
As part of our advocacy to fight drug addiction, Lord’s Agape Recovery Center (LARC) pushes an effort to provide effective treatment by utilizing ECLECTIC APPROACH. This approach is Holistic which means that Agape focuses in restoration of a well-rounded individual dealing with all aspects of mental, emotional, social, physical, physiological and spiritual health. The concept is mostsuitable to address addiction problem as it takes into consideration all factors in the healing process. It is also commonly known as a multi-disciplinary team approach.
LARC is composed of trained personnel of various disciplines who teamed up altogether for a common purpose. Ideally, the patient will have family and social support as part of the team. The support group works with Agape Recovery Center team directly in rehabilitating the patientsto extend moral support, encourage co-dependency, and to serve as hope and inspiration towards long term recovery.
Lord’s Agape Recovery Center is the brainchild of the couple “Lil and Jun” that challenged their dedication to continue their advocacy to help in the recovery of the victims from the “disease of addiction”. This advocacy started on the 3rd quarter of year 2009 in the province of Cavite. The couple developed a simple approach being a Happy Family living together in a Therapeutic community; it started as TC (Therapeutic Community) treatment approach. The center was completely setup with nurturing programs together with the deep relationship with GOD, which was inspired by exposure from certain community; the Catholic Servant Community, the retreats, the ME (marriage encounter), and the spiritual services. The TC (Therapeutic Community) approach was combined with the Spiritual Recovery, where we find the best and effective approach in healing the “disease of addiction”.
The training at the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB-EU), Quezon City Anti-Drug Abuse Advisory Council (QCADAAC) and exposure with various Government facilities and private drug rehabilitation center motivated the couple to do more research and study on how to improve such approach. They have developed the recovery of spirituality as the highest concepts, utilizing the Twelve Steps Program aims to treat patients with chemical dependency, endorsing a set of values and beliefs about the powerlessness of people over drug taking and turning to a “Higher Power” to help them combat the disease. In this approach, counselors and patients collaborate in defining the path to recovery. Intervention is made so effective and applicable for the recovering addicts, as they need a Place, a Person and a Program that everything is possible; happiness, healing and lifelong recovery process.
The combination of this approach is considered as the best program for us, but still the Center encounter difficulties like securing DOH accreditation, Family or guardian relationship and the unhealthy feedback outside the center. But GOD knows that these odds made the couple’s advocacy remained firm and strong. From the old name and trademark CARE that denotes personal love or a serious attention or consideration applied to doing something correctly or to avoid damage or risk, the couple digs for the deepest level of love fuelled by a desire to serve and do what is correct. This kind of love is patient and kind. It does not envy or boast. It is never proud, rude, or self-seeking. It always puts the need of another first. It is not easily angered and does not keep track of wrongs. It’s AGAPE, a GOD’s Love, a GOD’s character. AGAPE celebrates truth, protects and trusts, hopes, perseveres, and never fails. (1Cor. 13:4-7)
